The Scarecrows’ Wedding at Leicester Square Theatre until 2nd September

Review By Caroline Hanks-Farmer

Once again this year Scamp Theatre has a residency in London for the summer holidays. What better way to celebrate summer with the little one’s than to spend an hour at the Leicester Square Theatre seeing The Scarecrows’ Wedding.

Background

Adapted from Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s bestselling book, this award-winning show follows the preparation for Betty O’Barley (Philippa Hogg) and Harry O’Hay’s (Mark Kane) glorious wedding day. Harry sets off to search for their wedding essentials including a dress of feathers, a bunch of flowers and a necklace made from shells. However, when the farmer notices he is missing a scarecrow, he replaces Harry with the devilishly smooth but dangerous Reginald Rake.  Dashing, daring and ever so cool, can Reginald persuade Betty that he is the scarecrow for her? Will Harry make it back in the nick of time before Reginald ruins their special day?

Review

Sweet and perfectly charming is how I would describe this 60 minutes of fun. There is plenty of audience participation and the children (and adults) love it. With the instruments played by the three actors, this story follows the two scarecrows as they prepare for their wedding day.

Let’s face it who hasn’t looked at a scarecrow in a field and thought ‘did they just move’? Of course people of a certain generation will remember Worzel Gummidge and his escapades and like all good children’s stories there is usually a moral sub text.

This show is bright, colourful and full of fun. Children remain engaged throughout and even the adults find something to laugh about, with a couple of ‘topical references’. The characters which Harry and Betty meet along the way are all endearing, but I particularly loved Harry’s encounter with a snail.

In summary

Once again Scamp Theatre brings to life this delightful story, which young and old alike can enjoy. Hopefully the memory will stay with the youngsters forever, bringing a new generation of theatre goers. On until 2nd of September at Leicester Square Theatreits great family fun everyone can enjoy.
