SIX the Musical – Arts Theatre

Review by Caroline Hanks-Farmer

Six: Divorced, Beheaded, Live in Concert – This show just gets better and better, if you thought it was good before it’s now outstanding! A brief but hugely memorable history lesson awaits you at the Arts Theatre. Sexy, sassy, sensational, seductive, stunning and superb, are just six ways that you can describe this show and its awesome cast.

Written by Toby Marlow and Lucy MossSix enjoyed runaway success at the Edinburgh Fringe last year. Selling out, night after night, it then received a short run in London, and the Queens are back and have five Olivier nominations.

We all know the story of King Henry VIII’s six wives, but could you name them in order or tell the stories behind them? Since seeing Six last year my husband couldn’t understand why I could answer every quiz question surrounding these Queens, after joining me in this revisit he can. It’s catchy songs, sung by this feisty, liberated and empowered cast, accompanied by the tremendous all-female band, really does stay with you for days along with its history.

Each of the wives have a ‘Queenspiration’ meaning their musical style which ranges from Arianna Grande to Adele. Which was my favourite Queen? We are asked to decide which Queen was our favourite or rather who had the hardest story. Of course there is no answer to this and you are left championing all six wives.

The vocals are all outstanding along with sassy choreography (Carrie-Anne Ingrouille), perfectly complimented by superb lighting (Tim Deiling) and costumes (Gabriella Slade even made inconspicuous mic holders look fantastic). It really is a visual feast for the eyes.

In Summary

Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss have created something truly special here – a complete one of a kind, act of genius. Who knew history could be so entertaining? I managed to catch up with Lucy after the show and pleaded with her to consider doing the same with other periods of history. I’m sure this is what we’ve all been waiting for. These SIX Queens now rule the West End and long may their reign continue.
